Privacy Policy

1. Who we are

The Center for Human-Compatible AI (CHAI) is multi-institution research group based at UC Berkeley. CHAI’s mission is to develop the conceptual and technical wherewithal to reorient the general thrust of AI research towards provably beneficial systems. Our website address is humancompatible.ai. If you want to reach out to us, please contact chai-admin@berkeley.edu.

Because CHAI is based at UC Berkeley, for purposes of the General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”), the data controller is the Regents of the University of California, with a location at 1111 Franklin St. Oakland, California 94607. If you have questions or complaints about UC Berkeley’s treatment of your Personal Data, or about our privacy practices more generally, please feel free to contact your UC Privacy Official.

2. What personal data we collect and why

We will collect and retain only the minimum amount of data necessary to fulfill the purpose of the data collection, unless there is a legal requirement to maintain it for a longer period.

Unless you specifically provide it to us, we do not collect any special categories of personal information about you (this includes details about your race or ethnicity, religious or philosophical beliefs, sex life, sexual orientation, political opinions, trade union membership, information about your health and genetic and biometric data). Nor do we collect any information about criminal convictions and offences.

We do not use your data for any automated decision-making or profiling and we will never sell your data. With your permission, we may share your data with relevant organizations who have opportunities you may be interested in. We may also need to share your personal data as required to respond to lawful requests and legal processes; and in an emergency, to protect CHAI and the safety of our students, faculty and staff or any third party. If there is an unauthorized access of your data, we are responsible for alerting you within 72 hours of discovery.

The following list gives details of the purposes for which we collect personal data, and in each case, how it is stored and how it will be used.

2.1. Our newsletter

On our website you can enter your email address to subscribe to CHAI’s newsletter. We use MailChimp to manage the newsletter; you can read about their privacy policy here. Each newsletter will always contain an unsubscribe option.

2.2. Private mailing lists

CHAI maintains a number of private mailing lists for purposes such as organizing seminars, or disseminating relevant information to CHAI affiliates. These mailing lists are by invite or request only. You will not be added to these lists without your consent. If at any point you would like to be removed from any of these lists, you can follow the instructions here, or contact chai-admin@lists.berkeley.edu.

2.3. Job applications

When you apply for a job at CHAI, we collect information such as your name, contact details, resume, statement of motivation, recommendation letters, and any other information relevant to the role. This information is stored on a secure cloud storage service, and shared only with those involved in the recruitment process. This may include CHAI administrative staff, researchers, grad students, and UC Berkeley HR staff.

Some roles involve going through the UC Berkeley recruitment process in addition to CHAI’s application process. For these cases, you may wish to seek out the relevant UC Berkeley data protection information.

Some roles that involve working at CHAI are through other organizations, most notably the Berkeley Existential Risk Initiative, with which CHAI collaborates. In these cases, your application data will be available to the organization in question, which is not a party to this privacy policy.

We will store your information for two years after the date of your application, after which it will be deleted. If you would like your information removed before this date, please contact chai-admin@lists.berkeley.edu.

2.4. List of relevant contacts

If you express an interest in staying in touch with CHAI, we may ask if you are happy for us to add your contact details to our contact list. We will also store your current position and affiliation, notes about your interest, and sharing preferences. This is stored on a secure cloud storage service and sharing permissions will be restricted to relevant CHAI staff, students, faculty and researchers.

We may use this list to get in touch with you to:

  • Invite you to CHAI events
  • Notify you of CHAI jobs that fit your interests
  • Discuss collaboration, partnership, or other opportunities

If you agree, we may also share your contact details with related organizations who may have opportunities relevant to your interests. When you join the list, we will ask if you are happy to give blanket permission for this, if we should check with you on a case-by-case basis, or if you’d prefer not to have your contact details shared at all.

We will keep this information indefinitely, since relevant opportunities may occur on an ongoing basis. If at any point you would like to be removed from this list, please contact chai-admin@lists.berkeley.edu.

2.5. Donations

The CHAI website contains a link to a UC Berkeley site that enables people to make donations to CHAI, and collects information necessary to process the donation. You may wish to seek out the relevant UC Berkeley data protection information for this service.

2.6. Website

We don’t currently use cookies or analytics on the CHAI website. This may change in future, and if so this privacy policy will be updated to reflect the changes. However, we occasionally embed content from other sites (e.g. YouTube); these sites may use cookies.

3. Updating This Policy

We may update this Policy at any time. When we do, we will post a notification on the main page of our website and we will also revise the updated date at the bottom of this page. We encourage users to frequently check this page for any changes to stay informed about how we are helping to protect the personal information we hold.
