Is the speed with which people act in a strategic situation related to their social preferences? In this article we show, using a model from neuroscience research that maps response times to cognitive processes and data from three different repeated prisoners dilemma experiments, that response times do not separate cooperators from defectors, but distinguish those that act conditionally on the actions of others from those that act categorically. There is thus a relationship between cognitive effort and social value orientation.
