Thomas Krendl Gilbert submitted “The Passions and the Reward Functions: Rival Views of AI Safety?” to the upcoming Fairness, Accountability, and Transparency (FAT*) 2020 Conference.

The paper compares different approaches to AI Safety (e.g. CHAI, Partnership on AI, Value-Sensitive Design) with different schools of classical political economy. It organizes these approaches into four distinct camps, summarizes their key claims and disagreements, and outlines what each can learn from each other with reference to foundational disputes about the status of free markets with respect to human preferences and political sovereignty.
