CHAI PhD Students Accept Positions at MIT, Princeton, and DeepMind
15 Jul 2020
Rohin Shah, Jaime Fernández Fisac, and Dylan Hadfield-Menell have accepted jobs to begin after the completion of their PhD studies.
Rohin will work at DeepMind as a Research Scientist. Jaime began working as an Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering at Princeton University in the summer of 2020. Dylan will start working as an Assistant Professor at MIT starting in July 2021.
Rohin was advised by Anca Dragan, Pieter Abbeel, and Stuart Russell. His research focused on methods that allow us to build AI systems that pursue the objectives their users intend them to pursue, rather than the objectives that were literally specified. Rohin also started the Alignment Newsletter while he was at CHAI.
Jaime’s work combines safety analysis from control theory with machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques to enable robotic systems to reason competently about their own safety in spite of using inevitably fallible models of the world and other agents. Much of Jaime’s research uses dynamic game theory together with insights from cognitive science to enable robots to strategically plan their interaction with human beings in contexts ranging from human-robot teamwork to drone navigation and autonomous driving.
While at CHAI, Dylan was advised by Anca Dragan, Pieter Abbeel, and Stuart Russell. His research focused on algorithms that facilitate human-compatible artificial intelligence. In particular, he tried to develop frameworks that account for uncertainty about the objective being optimized.
